I have recently been offered a radar chrony for $50. These retail for about $500. This one is about 10 years old. Do they "wear out" and have to be recalibrated. If so does anyone know where, who and how much

Thanks guys:thumbsup:

You are supposed to get them recalibrated once a year (in Vic) but I doubt anyone ever has. Best talking to the local firearm/bow hunting shops for recalibration.

How do they actually work?

They are a doppler radar type chrony...work in a similar way to a radar speed gun
I have seen some vary quite a bit with a marker that is very consistant...as in...shoot it over 1 chrony, get regular speed of say 270 fps + or - 3fps, then try it over another chrony on the same day, with the same paint and no adjustments made and get 290 fps reading consistantly.
Also seen them affected by walkie talkies when they are used in very close proximity (by the reffs) give extremely high readings from a marker that obviously wasnt shooting that high (reading was 360fps when marker was really shooting at 280fps)
Generally, no, they dont wear out and for 50 bucks I think you are pretty much on a winner

Hey OOK,

I'd be asking the seller if its ever been recallibrated mate.

Was it a field-used one, or a privately owned one??
