View Full Version : New Baller
Hey guys i've just signed up here and i have to say its a huge relief; finding good resources for Australian paintball has been way too much effort.
I'm just getting into paintball now with my mates and we're really psyched. We've played a few games around the place and we want to kick it up a notch from a few games a year. Now we're only 17 finishing school but i guess there's no such thing as too young...unless you're under 15. I guess the sooner i start the sooner you can bruise me. Can you tell me though what kinda ages you are seeing? It seems to me that the average age is around mid 20s to 30s.
Basically I just wanted to get some info/tips on starting out in paintball that you vets might hav. Anything about setting up equpiment for a new guy/team would be really appreciated (cost does seem to be an issue). Btw i literally turn 18 on the last day of school so plans for my own marker aren't far off.
Also could somebody please explain to me why there is such a huge difference in price here when compared to buying in America. I understand that the sport is still growing here but it seems rediculous. Why don't more people import markers? (other than wanting to support Oz paintball)
Cheers

find your local field... play in their inhouse league if they have one and take it from there =)
Welcome Luke,
First you will have to decide what kind of paintball you will be looking to play the most (Tournament on Sup-Ais fields, or Recball in the bush and stuff)
Then we can point you in the direction of some affordable markers and setups.
Main reason for the price difference is that the market in Aus dictates the prices. Low sales = High prices, Freight is massive, have a look into it.

Welcome to paintball Luke:)
Prices in Australia seem higher as first you have to import the marker then the Australian doller is only worth 75 US cents.
You have to be a gun dealer to import a marker so there's more expense there.
By the way I'm 35 but the rest of my team are in their 20's.
For starting out check out the other help threads and such and you will get the common theme to buy headgear ( mask ) first then a marker as your headgear is THE most important thing you will buy.
For a marker an Ion is what I consider the best starter gun on the market closly followed by the A-5 or tippman 98.
You can go mad and buy your $2,000 + marker later.
I'll leave you with this though. Go to a training day at Samford or Velocity and see what tournament play is about. If you'd rather try scenario games then Samford is the place to be as well.
Either way most paintballers love showing off their markers and knowledge and will help you.
Thanks, my mates have been to velocity a few times and they seem to really like it. Tournament style play on the Sup'Air fields appeals to me most i think; it seems to be more of a sport as such. I emailed velocity a little while ago about the BNPL though that may be a little bit ambitious (thanks to velocity for the quick reply).
As for the importing idea that was a bit stupid of me. I looked into the postage of five ppls starting gear and the postage must have been at least US$300. Thanks again for the help so far and ummm please ignore the bit about the importing.

Get in contact with some of The Carnivores (A QLD Paintball team)...Or any other QLD team really.....
See when they will be at training, and rock up, use (And break) their guns, and have a chat to them....
If you happen to talk to a guy called Deon (Doing) DONT LISTEN! As he has zero skillz and will steer you into laser tag.....
Umm Davey did you even look at where this guy is from??? Carnivores lmao...
Luke good to see some new blood coming into the Paintball scene. Firstly before you even consider buying a marker go to either velocity's Walk on days or Samfords training days and have a look and 99% of the players will let you shoot their markers. You need to try before you buy. Look at your budget as you'll need a Marker $$$, Hopper $100 - $250 (thing that sits on top), Air system $300, Pack and Pots (the thing you wear to hold the extra paint) $80+, then all the other little things. If you work out how much you can spend then you can go shopping. Firstly bring all your players out to velocity walk on day and Samford so you can introduce yourselves. Everyone will be more then happy to help you out and talk to you and answer your questions. Don't forget for a newbie no question is a dumb question. I'm trying to be at the next walk on day so look out for me. Good luck

Yeh... Brisbane.....
Its not like QLD is a big state or anything....
Yeah i think i will try and get to the next velocity walk-on sunday (June 18th?) with the rest of the guys, you'll probably be able to spot us. I looked into markers, at first i thought i might get away with a pretty cheap system to start with but considering everything else u need esp air systems (velocity allows only HPA right?) i might be waiting a little bit longer than i thought. As for goggles, would i be better off investing in a good set of goggles i wont need to replace for a LONG time or do i just buy cheap and replace? (Sorry i'm so full of different questions)

Empire Events and Proto Switch/axis.
they are the more popular goggs atm and are all really nice.

Use the SEARCH feature on this site for anything thats a kinda common question (Pretty much everything has been asked and answered).
Not sure about QLD, but NSW Firearms Licensing is a bit of a long process. So have a check into your firearms license, get some info on it all and avoid a possible long wait.
Oh yeh..... V Force Profilers are sweet goggles!.....Definetly buy the best mask you can. Safety First!! :)

As the guys have said - try before you buy ..
Go to the Velocity or Samford walk on days, see what the regulars are wearing, what gear they have, ask to try their markers - the main point is talk to them and work out what would best suit you.
If you do have a few guys and and you feel the Velocity night league might be a bit much - come try the next 4Play touney at Samford. A number of players are having their first tourney. Finals are on 14/15 Oct
At least come out the South Pacs and see teams from all over, 5/6 August.
Worth a look ..
4Play (http://www.paintballaustralia.com.au/4play.htm)
Samford Dates (http://www.billspaintball.com/vb3/showthread.php?t=6801)
Hope to see you on the field some time ..
Welcome Luke.
As for licencing, walk into any Qld police station and ask questions - they should be able to answer any or point you in the right direction. You will need to do a firearms safety course (which has nothing to do with paintball) but is a requirement of getting a licence (the police usually have details as to where you can do these or try any firearms dealer).
You will also need a form from a field operator sayin you play paintball etc (this is for a genuine reason to own a firearm)
It can be a long process but do everything right and you should have no worries - just play their game.
These guys are right the most important piece of equip is goggs. I like JT flex 8's but it's all personal preference and you get what you pay for.
Good luck:thumbsup:

come out to samford(best field around:lol:) on the 2nd sunday of the month and have a game..
if you pm big gav before you come out, he can arrange to have some gear for you to lend
while your there you can have a talk to some people and see what sort of gear that they are using, maybe try a cpl of markers to see what you like
i agree with ook....the flex 8 jt's are great
By the way I'm 35 but the rest of my team are in their 20's.
but its a young 35

Welcome to paintball Luke:) By the way I'm 35 but the rest of my team are in their 20's.
Welcome to the fold mate. And indeed make your way out to Samford... recball, Special Ops club and Sup-air... a paintball addics dream  but if you don't like the great ozzie outdoors then check out Velocity as well. Every one you see at either locale will gladly let you in on what, where, when and how about the sport  :armed:
Ahh to be 35 again... C'mon Crazy you're not that old... just wiser  n maybe a little slower  :p Luke my lad it don't matter how old you is, my team ranges from 16 to... 45:eek:

    they are even worse then asking your next door neighbour.
Seriously ring Weapons Licencing 3364 6464 i think ask for weapons licencing then ask away. DON'T ask average joe copper, but they will ONLY be able to help you with getting a licence and getting your marker registered. Anything else to do with paintball ask on here.
