Hi guys,
Me and a couple of friends are going to start up a 3 man team and are currently looking at gear and what to get. I have been looking at Proto I like the look of the marker and they seem resonable price.
We are doing the saftey course soon in Melbourne and just wondering what to look out for as well.
Any advice and a good starter pack??
Cheers
Leigh

Get in contact with Neil (http://www.billspaintball.com/vb3/member.php?u=50) as he is usually the guy that runs the saftey courses these days.

Get yourself to a pro shop to try out the gear.
Sizing is very important.
The Proto SLG or Rail are decent enough markers.
First thing is to get yourself a good mask, hopper and air tank. A good mask is a requisite. Hopper and Air tank you can use on any gun so look into that as well. I would try a few guns first before buying any though. Go to a few members sessions (depending on which state you are in) and try out some different markers as well as speak to some of the more experienced players.
ALSO: Check out the new/casual players forum.

Lots of helpful info in there for newer players, remember to read the stickies.
You're in Melbourne, so heading out to Pro Paintball Shop in Campbellfield shouldn't be too difficult - they were really good about helping to get the right sizing etc. Snipers Den has a shop at the field too.
If you're ordering online, I've never personally had any trouble with any of the australian online suppliers - although I will say that paintballshop.com.au is my preference based on the quality of service and fast delivery - I can order on a Tuesday, and be playing with my new gear by Friday.
Alternatively, show for a members day at any of the fields, people are usually pretty good about letting you check out thier stuff and providing advice on what worked for them or didn't.
Avoid the proto SLG, seen too many with damaged bolts....warranty was also non existant in some cases....

I have a bunch of 2010 slg's on my field. They are a sweet little gun. I heard the original (2008 model) ones may have had problems but they've had 2 years to iron out any issues. These 2010 ones get bashed pretty hard and run sweet. I think they are definetly worth a look at for a starter gun, i was really surprised at how well they run for the price. The PMR is an insane gun for the money also.
