Took this from PBnation:-

Ok a lot of questions have come up on how to remove a reg. I am in hopes to make a thread with different methods or one single thread for removing tank regulators. It seems that in the air systems forum lots of posts and threads involve taking the reg off.

Here is my method to remove a tank reg.

Hex tank reg (a tank whose reg has the hex shape)

* Note it is very very important that the tank is empty before doing anything*

1. gather tools:
- strap wrench
- crescent wrench
- a good padded vice

2. Take the burst disk(s) off with the crescent wrench. It is important to know which disks go where so write it down or make a mark.

3. Take your guage and fille nipple off. Careful not to loose any peices of the fill nipple or you will have to buy another, or parts.

4. At this point you should have just the tank with a raw reg ( not fill nipple, guage, etc). Carefully put the hex shape into a padded vice and tighten the vice to the point where it is firm, but not damaging.

5. Take the strape wrenche(s). If you have one put it at the bottom of the bottle closer to the reg. This for me usually allows me to give more torque carefully until the reg starts to unscrew and i can then unscrew the rest with ease.

After that you should now have your reg off your tank. Make sure to not loose anything. Keep it in a little baggie when you are traveling with the paper you used to mark where everything went.

Non-hex shape tank reg (circular)

*Note very important for this to also make sure your tank is empty.*

1. gather tools:
- strap wrench
- crescent wrench
- a good padded vice (leather, fake leather, rubber, possibly clothe or wood.)

2. Take the burst disk(s) off with the crescent wrench. It is important to know which disks go where so right it down or make a mark.

3. Take your guage and fille nipple off. Careful not to loose any peices of the fill nipple or you will have to buy another or parts.

4. At this point you should have just the tank with a raw reg. Carefully put the Reg in the tank vice with leather or rubber. You really need to find a material that grips the tank reg well. You then should tighten the vice as much as you can since the circular reg is more likely to slip, but make sure you do not overtighten or damage the regulator.

5. Take the strape wrenche(s). If you have one put it at the bottom of the bottle closer to the reg. This for me usually allows me to give more torque carefully until the reg starts to unscrew and i can then unscrew the rest with ease. If the reg slips or starts to slip try tightening it.

Notes Or troubleshooting

- An airsmith knows what he is doing and has done it before. This may be your first time. You decide how comfortable or if you have the ability to do it.

- If the reg will not budge or something doesnt feel right, then the reg may be loctited. Try running the reg under warm water for a few minutes so the warmth or heat will loosen up the loctite. Careful though the tank is made of materials that are weak to extreme heat so no scalding water. Simply warm.

Re attaching the reg.

1. Make sure the o ring between the tank and reg is in good condition. Inspect it.

2. Put the reg in the vice like before, and screw the tank in by hand at first to make sure it screws in right. The worst thing that could happen is cross threading.

3. Make sure the tank goes in and the o ring is staying alligned.

4. Take the strap wrench and torque the tank onto the reg, but always be aware that the o ring is alligned. It is the only thing making a seal between the tank and reg.

5. If you do not use loctite, it is absolutley important to get the reg on as tight as possible, to keep it from unscrewing when the system isnt aired and possibly when it is.

Usually when aired you have safety features that you will see on your reg called bleed channels or depths that are milled airways on the threads of the regulator after a few threads of the tank reg. These incase of the reg unscrewing allow the tank to completely empty and not become a rocket.

Also when the tank has air in it. The 3-4.5k pressure from the tank is pushing on the tank reg and threads so it aswell becomes difficult to unscrew because of the constant pressure.

Anyways i hope this is some help for people looking to take there regs off and on. Also would be nice for people who have done it before post there methods that they have used in hopes this could become a great source for those seeking information.

Most tanks unscrew anti - clockwise.

just a question, but is it actually leaking from the reg ?

Have you tested this with some sort of solution of detergent and water to find out where the air is escaping from ?

what's the age and condition of the gear ?

To be honest, you'd be best handing it over to a pro shop ( if you can ) and let them sort your woes... you dont get a second chance if this shit goes up in your face.. ( or hurts someone else, if you dont repair it properly )
