View Full Version : Apex Tip on other barrels

If there is one thing I've learnt about barrels, it is the importance of matching paint to bore size.
However the standard APEX barrel does not seem to offer this option.
I've seen various people's photos of their markers include an APEX tip on other better barrels.
How is this done?
Is there an adaptor kit?
Do they just fit?
Are they bought pre-done?
More specifically can they be fitted to a Deathstix, Stiffi or Freak Kit?
Can anyone that has APEX tip on a decent barrel kit, comment on their experience with using their barrel combination?
Just to save time. I know that breakage % drops as velocity drops over extended range.
Thanks for your input people,
Matt

I brought this

and went to work on it pretty easy really would be alot easer then the aliminum barrel like i used, if you used it on Carbon Fibre barrel is should just screw on

The barrel kit is a J&J Performance kit.
And the adapter is made so that it slips over the end of the barrel, with three set screws that screw into the three indents on the end of the barrel.
It's pretty consistant up to about notch 4 on the APEX. It's only when you start trying to fling paint off into the horizon that you lose consistancy.

get the apex front that fits a freak back, then you can size up accordingly

I have a Stiffi Switch kit for my Angel1. So how do I get the Apex onto the Stiffi?
Do I just buy an Apex barrel and swap the tip onto the Stiffi? Does it require modding? Or is there a different way?
Thanks again

So is that a front which already has the tip installed? My mate has Freak kit with All-American front. Does this Apex front replace the All-American? Where is it available? In Australia?
Thanks again
You can't remove the tip from the switch kit without stuffing the barrel so don't if you really need to put an apex on get a cheap arse barrel and fit it to that but me personally think they are a waste of time and you too will come to realise this once you play with it for a bit.
Stick the the Stiffi switch as it has everything you need to play the game without costing you a dime.

There are adaptors being made by Palmers Pursuit shop (http://www.palmer-pursuit.com/cart/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=43&products_id=202), or by the Underground Mod Shop (http://undergroundmodshop.com/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=47&osCsid=8b2538a9eeb092b0380967f53fed56f8). Both are well made, and have fans all over the States. You can also do a search of the A5 Operators Group forums (http://www.a5og.net/forum.php) for the Apex tape mod.
If you don't want to mod a barrel (it is only electrical tape btw), Lapco makes a few Apex ready barrels, I believe they are even shipping with the Apex tip with them, so you don't need to get the Apex barrel. I had also heard a rumour that Freak was considering an Apex ready barrel.

this is the type of system i am running with at the moment.
I had a full freak set to start with, then got the apex fronts to suit.
I'm not sure about locally, the apex fronts I got were imported from the US.

Well I definitely don't want to damage the Stiffi Switch or make the mod permanent.
I do however have a spare barrel from an Angel1 aftermarket highlight kit.
If I wanted to mod it, do I get a normal Apex barrel and detach the Apex Tip and fit it to the other barrel? ....electrical tape etc

Wouldn't you just get something like this and do it right http://shop.specialopspaintball.com/paintball-marker-upgrades/paintball-barrels/standard-barrels.html tape sounds dodgy?

That does sound good. How can I determine that the adaptor will work with the barrel that I want to use? Or are you saying get adaptor and another spec ops barrel?

Ok here's the thing, I can only assume you haven't used the marker much yet or we wouldn't be here right now so use the barrel you have (Stiffi) i guarantee you will be happy with it if not i will get you a apex tip to fit on the standard barrel you have.

I have put several 100 rounds through the Stiffi and I love the consistency.
A bit like having different golf clubs, I like the idea of APEX with good paint to bore match. Flat trajectory and a 'little' extra range sounds great to me, depending on circumstances.
Am I missing a big downside that I haven't thought of?
Thanks for the ongoing input people!

yeah, the dollars for the apex system and american tip to fit, its a big bite on the wallet, if you go that way

I got my kit when the dollar was worth a bit more, and it only cost me $120 shipped from the US, for an 8 piece kit. Not bad at all. Probably cost a bit more now though.
The APEX adapter cost me another $30 after I tried it with the Tape Mod which was crap by the way. It works, but not as well as the proper APEX adapter.

oner thing i have noticed about thr SO adaptor is there isn't grip in the outside to unscrew the apex front, so u need to take apart the apex front to remove the adaptor, the only bad thing about the adaptor

So the SO adaptor takes how long to remove from the barrel? Under 5 minutes?
Does it only attach to SO C-series barrels?
What about Stiffi Switch kit and others? I have already been informed about the Freak front.
Can an APEX be put onto a Deathstix?

takes about 30 sec to take apart the apex front to remove the adaptor
yes it only works with the c-series
You can use the apex fron on labco/smartparts(certain)
or
you can get some sticky tape and make it fit to other barrels

The J&J one attaches with three set screws so if you tried it on another barrel it'd probably scratch the finish wher the set screws snug down.
I suppose you could always put some tape around the end to lessen the scratching.
