i had one on my gun for part of Gravity Games 06
we mounted the small wireless camera just infront of my Feedneck
then gaffa taped the 9v battery to the side of my reloader b in the "groove"

Didnt effect any line of sight, didnt get shot, and got some pretty good footage!

Depends what kind you want to use?

Wireless

I have wired about 560tv lines I think.. It was around $900 alone, then you need a minidv camera to record it to. I have a dcrhc96 cost $1300.

If you just want something to make little films for yourself..

You can get some helmet cams that record straight to SD cards for around the 250 dollar mark..

Sure you are not going to make a Steven Spielberg production but will still turn out pretty good. Since the only thing in paint ball that really requires a fast frame rate is the actual paint leaving the marker you will still end up with most of the footage coming out ok.

Some to look at are the

Oregon scientific Action Cam 2k - sample vid playing paintball http://youtube.com/watch?v=ZNHMFbzgPdE

Tony hawk helmet cam - Not very good but can be had for less than 100 bucks - sample vid http://youtube.com/watch?v=MiNRomi4Xh8&feature=related

Gopro Hero - Only see the shape of this one being an issue but still a good one in the 250 bracket - sample vid http://youtube.com/watch?v=7mz_RegNic0

Remember youtube decreases footage quality

I had a Tony Hawk cam mounted on my gogs. Took decent footage at close range considering the cost (I got mine for $65 AUD, delivered. From eBay), the other thing is that it was hard to get the angle right when I attached it to my gogs. The device went well until it took a couple of direct hits upon which it died.
I'm planning on getting the Oregon Scientific cam next as it has better framerate and res but I want to come up with some sort of protective sheath/shroud so It doesnt become KIA like my last one.
Head cams are an awesome idea but they need to be protected....

The Vid below shows the Oregon Cam falling 1900Ft (630m) and still working after being strapped to a rocket.

So I'm not sure if you'd need a cover for it ...

I've got the Oregan Scientific 2K and all you need to do is strap it to something hard. For most of you it'll be your head.

It works fine. The video quality ain't superb to say the least but it captures the moment. Strapping it to your gat will give you some very loud hollow pong'ing sounds everytime you fire. It takes 2 AA batteries which will last you a while. I've not changed them since I bought it at the end of last year.

No you won't need a cover for it as it is water and shock resistant. I'm pretty sure it can take a direct hit as well. Just not in the lens. But then again, it's inset so it does provide some protection from a breaking ball.

One problem with the Oregan Scientific is that it only takes a 2GB SD Card max. On full resolution it'll get you about an hour of footage, which is more than enough for a day out paintballing.

I'll dig up some of my videos to see if they are usable and put them up here.

the footage is crystal clear when view on a tv, however ive found i lose alot of picture quality when uploading to my computer then the internet, its only the program and computers ive been using, im sure if i were smarter, had some more cash and were computer savvy i could get better quality pics,

they are pricey and are very fiddly and are prone to breaking, but its a newish technology that hasnt had alot of development put into it

pretty sure these guys used oregon cameras at the last op invasion

I think they've noted that they moved the camera from the helmet and installed in onto the marker to get better pictures.

Guys that did this are from Team Sydney Socom.

My Tony Hawk cam was supposedly 'shock and water resistant' too but that only lasted 2 paintball outtings. Shock-resistant is not the same as shock-proof either. Personally I beleive if it cant survive a direct hit from a range of less than a foot then it needs some sort of aftermarket protection. My cam also got paint on the lens (which was also inset and tiny) and it was really hard to get off. I tried using proper lens cleaning tools but it's very difficult and unless you can use professional lens cleaning techniques the image will never again be as clear as when the camera was brand new.

Well there's your problem...

Never knew Mr. Hawk made cameras...

Probably some cheap made in China by some monkey special, and they stamped his name onto it to sell a bunch.

lol yeah homeboy aint known for his electronics manufacturing ability.
The same could be said for most consumer level cameras though. I dont know of any company that claims you can shoot paintballs at their camera all day long and it'll still record perfectly and I doubt you'll ever find one!
That's why I think any paintball head cam should be fitted with a protective box...

I have the Helmet cam from here
Launch Helmet Cams (http://www.launchhelmetcams.com/products/Team/)
The protective surround I got with it will take being shot with ease! only down side is that its wired and you need to have the camcorder on you aswell.

Although the quality from the helmet cam is BETTER than the camcorder itself! (1.3 megapixel dv camera)

They now have an intergrated recored/cam model but is a fair bit more expensive.

are you sure your not confusing that hole with the one that JT have been placing in their visors for over 10 years to accommodate the vortex fan series, which funnily enough has the on/off switch on the top left of itself.

here is a picture i prepared earlier showing what that hole is REALLY for......
