We are very proud to announce the creation of the "National 5s" tournament series, which will kick off it's first season in 2007.

We aim to make this the first truly national series in Australia, and we will be holding 4 rounds this year, each in a different state and each will be played in conjunction with a local tournament series...

- Round 1: Moama, NSW
- Round 2: Adelaide, SA
- Round 3: QLD (TBC)
- Round 4: Perth, WA

The details for this series are as follows, feel free to post any questions if I leave anything out...

- Entry is $1,000 per team
- Teams must register through the website (http://www.national5.com.au) and will be required to pay a $200 deposit by March 26th to confirm their attendance. Remainder of the entry fee is payable upon arrival.
- There will be one open division (but this may change depending on the number of teams)
- Each round will be a best of 3 games (may also change depending on numbers)
- Games will have 5 minute time limit. There will be a 2 minute turnaround between games for teams to repod/regas
- Top 4 teams at the end of prelims will go into a round-robin finals series

- The prize pool will be huge, and will be in the form of cash and paint. (First prize alone will be up to $10,000!!)
- Huge sponsors are on board, including WDP Angel, and National Paintball Supply (more to be announced shortly)
- Great product prizes will also be donated to the simultaneous local events
- Bottom line: The organizer is not looking to make a profit from these events. Once costs are covered (refs, setup etc), ALL entry fees go back into the prize pool.

- This is the first national BYO paint tournament in Australia! If you want to bring your own paint, we won't stop you!
* However, any persons found to be using paint that is deemed unsafe or otherwise unsatisfactory will have it removed, and may be removed themselves.
- A huge variety of paint will also be available for purchase in our on-site proshop, including; proto, v-comp, empire, dynasty, gap and rps

- An experienced reffing team, headed by Bones, will be present at each event in the series
- Each event will have a professional setup, featuring 4500psi push-button fills
- BBQ Lunch is supplied each day
- Field layouts will be posted at least a week before each event, and a music video will be released after each round
- Each event is a standalone event - ie: there is no end-of-season placings

For up-to-date details, or to register your team, go to www.national5.com.au (http://www.national5.com.au/main.html)

So there you have it, let the games begin!

Very intriguing series.

5-man.
Bones as head ref.
Big cash prizes.
BYO Paint!!!

...Very nice =P

And the guys from Moama do put on an excellent show (It would be wicked if you had a photographer filming the games to go with the music video =P)

The fact that each event is standalone is a big plus too imo, and well suited to the nature of paintball in Australia. Playing all four events won't be feasible for most teams, so why should they pay for prizes they won't be in contention for?

And as prizes go... Cash > Guns =P

Very tempting series indeed!

Yes, round 4 will coincide with the Gravity Games.

We'll see what we can do...

so every team you play is best of three?what if you win the first 2 do you play a third?

Ok for those who haven't played the best-of-three setup yet, it goes like this:

You and team X square off. You win game 1 - you get 1pt, X wins game 2 - X gets 1pt, you win game 3 - you win 2-1. BUT, if you win game 1 & 2 - you get 3pts for a wash and there is no 3rd game. Got all that? Good!

It seems you can!

i do know how the best of 3 thing works, i have played the odd one. im not that stupid.
but the way i read it, its states best of 3 rounds, not finals, so you are meaning rounds in the tornie, not finals in a round of a single event in the national series? example 7 rounds possible 21 games?
if this is rounds in the tournie what countback system do you have in place cause i can see a bucketload of teams on the same points after the prelims.

so this will be the first national series but without a national winner?
seems someone misses out on bragging rights.

Finals all tourney long ? (I.E First to get 2 points) - Seems like it

What is the Finals setup, or is the winner the team with the most points at the end of the weekend.

I think it'll be part of it, because firstly it wouldn't make sense to have to worthwhile tournaments at the same time, and secondly because that's just mean if it isn't :p

Sounds like a great series, wish I could make it to all instead of just Perth.

At the end of the prelims, the top 4 teams will enter the finals. 1 vs 4, 2 vs 3, loser vs loser for 3rd/4th, winner vs winner for 1st/2nd. All match-ups will be a best of 3 just like the prelims.

No offence intended man, just trying to clear it up for anyone who might not know the routine. And yeah you got it right, if there are 7 rounds, you're guaranteed a minimum of 14 games up to a possible 21 games, plus finals.

As for countbacks, surprisingly enough we have very rarely had multiple teams finish on the same points, but eliminations and flag grabs/hangs are recorded in each game so that we can seperate them for finals.

for the prelims, are you running a time frame between the best of three games?
similiar to x-ball do you have a time limit? or do you go back kit up & back out in around 10-15 mins like a normal 5 man format?
and how many rounds do your want to run, depending on teams.

CJD

So Is It Part Of Gravity Games or competing with Gravity Games???

It will be part of Gravity Games. For the other 3 rounds, it will be a seperate tournament run at the same time and at the same place as a local event (eg. Round 1 is held alongside Round 2 of the Moama 3 Man). But for Gravity, it's impossible to run two events that big at the same time.

Man it's quote-city in here! I've never quoted people so much in my life.

Ok... Timeframes! Each game will have a 5 minute time limit, and teams will be allowed 2 minutes between each game to re-pod and re-gas. There will be several push-button fills just off the field, and the staging areas are adjacent to the field aswell so 2 minutes will be heaps.

Now... Rounds! Just like you say, this is all dependant on teams. We are expecting at least 15 teams, and at that number we want to run at LEAST 10 rounds for the 2 days, plus finals. We may be running two fields, so in that case we'll fit in a lot more rounds. The ultimate goal is for each team to play every other team at least once before finals - but if numbers are too big of course that will become impossible.

Will be interesting to see how it goes. Games will have to be very quick since no pit stops in between games. its 1 or 2 minute turn around each game yes?

On another note how will both 3-man and 5-man events run on same weekend. We would need to pick one as we obviously wouldn't be able to play both would we?

As I said above (don't make me start quoting myself too - I'll go to sleep and dream about quote tags tonight), there'll be a 2 minute turnaround between each game.

As for the two events running together, they will be run at the same time (on seperate fields of course). All players are completely free to play both the 3 man and the 5 man - in fact many players are already planning to do so. The rounds in each competition will be worked around each other so that players can play both. The Moama 3 Man is a very affordable, friendly tournament - if you want more details go to tourneys.propaintballshop.com.au (http://tourneys.propaintballshop.com.au/main.html)

Thanks Shan.

I'd just like to let everyone know that a deposit of $200 will be required from each team to confirm attendance.

It is very important that all teams register for the event at the website:
http://www.national5.com.au

Once you have registered, you'll need to ring on 1300 733 333 and talk to Cameron to get your deposit sorted out. Deposits will need to be submitted at least a week before the event, so by March 26th.

Several teams are verbally confirmed for Round 1, but only 2 have registered officially so far - Victorious and Southern Storm. An up-to-date team list will be kept on the website for all to see.

So get your entries in!

Sounds like an awesome event! Best of luck with it, hope you can make a decent go of it!

Keep in mind that I don't want to start the whole BYO vs Field Paint war thing again - Do some brands of paint still use peanut oil or palm oil? I am just worried that with the rising amounts of people with allergies... Do you have any restricions on certain brands of paint in that respect?

Again, Awesome work on the series - Hope to be a part of it someday!

Ok, the official team list has been started on the website, so head on over to http://www.national5.com.au (http://www.national5.com.au/main.html) periodically to stay updated.

So far 5 teams are officially registered for the event, as are listed on the site. Thirteen teams in total have voiced their intentions to play though, so we just need those teams to register through the site or by phoning 1300 733 333 to make it official.

If every tentative team registers, the list would look like...

Geelong Dragons (Vic) - registered
Geelong Extreme (Vic) - registered
Kronik (SA) - registered
Victorious (Vic) - registered
XLR8 (ACT) - registered
Evil WASP (WA)

Would have liked to have seen that at Gravity.. but unfortunately it didn't happen. The Victorious that played AXL late last year was more of a Victorious/Tsunami hybrid team, so I'm sure many would like to see that matchup at National 5s in a non-Xball environment.

Yes, most definately. In fact, that's the whole point - to increase participation in local events around the country, while at the same time exposing the local players to a higher level of paintball that they will hopefully want to try for themselves.

Most (if not all) 5-man teams are putting in at least one 3-man team aswell. There will be two 5-man fields running both days, and a third field for the 3-man on the Sunday. There may even be a 4th field, making two for each competition - but that is yet to be finalized.

1. Any chance of fills closer to the 3man pits / fields

3. Any more pit tents in the centre of the 3man area.

As Jeremy said, there won't be a need for fill stations near the 3 Man fields, as you can't refill between games anyway. There will be a lot more tents / space in the pit areas this time for all the teams (both 5s and 3s) to find room, so everyone will be housed in the same area - making it a lot easier for marshalls to find and alert teams. As for toilets, I don't know, but I'll pass along your suggestion.

Yeah isnt really a need to be close to the 3man field but those that have chosen to play need quick access to air. Ow yeah please no teams using the tent if there is one where there was last time just before the chrono. Im presuming that will become the team pit area for the 5man teams to repod etc.

That's pretty much it. There will be no teams staged under the tent between the 5 Man fields holding up traffic this time - it will be just a viewing area and will be kept accessible for teams during changeover periods. As for fill stations in that area - all I can say is it may be a possibility, but no promises or guarantees just yet.

Ok, I've now received conformation on fill areas, and here is an updated site plan...

So in answer to your questions - in addition to the fill stations that were in place last time, there will also be fills near the 3 Man fields, aswell as in the corridor between the 5 man fields. Hopefully this will satisfy everyone!

... You may also notice there are barricades on the fields now!

camel
29-03-2007, 10:31 PM
Its to stop teams from counting down the 10 seconds and getting a split second advantage. It's pretty hard to call a false start with the naked eye if its only a fraction of a second.

We saw it used at the Gravity Games with great success and decided it would be a great inclusion in to the National 5s series.

Birdman
30-03-2007, 07:13 AM
yeah it does work well - we used it a couple of months ago and its the best way to prevent the slight edge going to a team. It makes it almost impossible to false start and get away with it.

TRENT

I have to say im not sure about the 5-15 second thing either. If they say 10 seconds and blow wistle after 5 seconds its a bit silly. Teams like to swap movements in last few seconds so teams cant tell where they are going. Ah well just seems a bit silly

Birdman
30-03-2007, 10:00 AM
I think you get a 30 second warning first - which pretty much means get your arse ready and make final positions and plans. Once the 10 second warning goes you basically need to be ready to go immediately - any more messing around could cost you a missed start. I doubt the ref would blow the whistle 1 second after the 10 second warning but the idea is that you need to be ready for anything after that point.

TRENT
30-03-2007, 10:10 AM
Its not that you aint ready its got to do with changing how players stand in barricade. If you look at opposing team you can usually tell how many runners they have and shooters and where. If you quickly change some stances in last 5 seconds or not even get ready until last 5 seconds it doesnt give other team a chance to make changes to their play. Its mainly a thing in Xball but also comes into play in other formats.

Ah well it just seems like a bit of a silly change from NPPL rules but i can see why its been done.
