View Full Version : SA fields, protection, paint and licencing...
Hey all,
I've been doing bulk reading on paintball in the last little while and have got a few questions... I have searched but to no avail..
Firstly, are there any of the fields in South Aus that are particularly good? I have used the directory and looked at all thier sites, but some non-propaganda would be nice. I played a while ago at Skirmish SA, but thats about it.
Second, protective gear. Specifically a box to protect the fellas. Do ppl wear them? When I went out last time no one had them. I was tagged in the belt buckle at point blank range and thought one might be a good idea, next time they might be a couple of inches lower.
Third, I'm currently doing all the paperwork for my gun licence and it all seems to be ok. However, I was wondering what the deal is with the tafe course? I was just told I need to do one and that was it. Is it expensive? When and what do I do? How long?
I have also had a look around at a lot of the paintball suppliers sites. What sort of money do people pay for a 2000rnd box of paint in Aus? is it hard to get? And do rental fields let you bring your own case? $20 for 100rnds seems pretty damn expensive.
Finally, are there any simple things that a noob can do to improve the experience? And are there any things that will make me look less joombie?
Cheers for the help, and i'll post less next time...

welcome to the world of paintball,
Some poeple wear boxes, sox will also do, The course is not much , I think $100 for the day, with books
Paintballs normally start from $75 for a box (like Tomahawk its tops)
Improve youself, spend alot of time on forms and come to alot of events
Whats your game, Speedball/supair or woodball/bushball

Try Adrenalin Paintball Sportz, main south Rd Hackham.. Awsome field with the only Sup air set up in S.A
protective gear. Specifically a box to protect the fellas. Do ppl wear them?
Pro players dont wear boxes. They wear slide shorts which had padding built into them. Most playing pants today have padding built in as well.

Its an 8 hour course. Gotta go to fire range at Wingfield, do a small written test and a small practical. Its very easy if you have used a fire arm before. And also common sence.
What sort of money do people pay for a 2000rnd box of paint in Aus? is it hard to get? And do rental fields let you bring your own case?
People pay between $70 - $100 per box 2000 rounds. Its not hard to get if you are a tournament player. Teh more you play, get into teh sport and join team the cheapier it will become. And NO, most rental field wont let you take your own, unless your in a team training or playing a tournamnet..
And are there any things that will make me look less joombie?
just have fun and be safe
Hope this helps. If you need any more info please contact me.
Thanks for your quick response!
Thx for the info on paint. Its not too pricey, but I kinda expect that the field owner wouldn't accept me bringing my own - it would cut into profits. I'd probably also need pods, harness, etc to carry it in.
I'm kinda into both. I loved the sheer pace of speedball (did it with tyre piles not sup-air style) but I burnt through a third of my paint in the first game.. lol.. The whole using the terrain, stealth, tactics part of woodsball was also awesome. I'm still sitting on the fence. When it comes to buying stuff I'm hoping to get stuff that's kinda dual-duty. And I think I'll use a cricket box till I buy slide shorts..
Thanks for the info on the course, sounds pretty easy..
Adrenalin Paintball Sportz sounds interesting. They don't seem to have a website tho. Do you have any more detail on them? Equipment, fields (just sup-air?), pricing?
I guess it's all going to come down to practice.. Sounds like fun :evil

No killer uses a box

same answer - no byo at fields but talk to your field owner and see what deal you will get for buying a box off of them

Welcome to the wicked world of paintball my friend!!!
As for your questions...
Your first and third questions are best answered by those in your state. As you're a member here, look at the threads you are reading, look at the locations of the members posting, and PM them for info. You've been given some very good advice above by those who are in your state. As I understand it, JSC is ad Adelaide boy if memory serves. Also, JJJ has told ya to hit up Adamage on the PM's (private messages - sorry mate - acronyms are a bit of a way of life for me). He will definitely be able to give you some very good advice as far as the whole licensing side of things goes. As a rule, licensing questions are best directed to those in your state, so don't be afraid to PM your compatriots with any questions you have.
As to your second question of wearing a box...
If you are planning on playing with punters (noobs, newbies, whatever your term of choice is...), I would definitely say it is a good idea. The main reason for this is that you're not playing with people who are used to pointing a firearm and shooting. If you join a club and are usually playing with people who are regular players, then I don't think that its really necessary. The reason for this is that we who play regularly don't shoot each other in the balls.
With good reason.
The more you play, the better your muscle memory will become and the more accustomed to putting your body into a predetermined position you will become. The reason I make this point is that you will get used to using your body as not only an extension of your marker, but you will also get used to putting your body into such a position as to minimise the ouchies.
As to your fourth, as all above have stated, most, if not all fields will outlaw you using byo paint, as you have to realise that this is usually their main source of income. There is a very good reason that for one-off players fields will charge $20 for every 100 rounds you buy.
If your a member of a club that your particular field hosts, then as I understand it they will have a member's rate for paint, whether that be per 100, or per box. Personally, I am used to paying between $70 to $95 a box.
You can see the savings.
Do be wary though; some fields will not allow you to buy paint by the box.
Hmmm. Anyway...
I've stretched this out I know, but we are always very excited, happy and satisfied to see another player want to become more than just a one-off at a "field near you".
Welcome to the dark side mate.:evil
Enjoy.

Hey Guys,
Most questions have been answered pretty well but i gotta say,
WEAR A BOX!!
Most of the tough guys dont, but i do.
I like my boys in 1 piece! [or is that two?]
I doesnt happen too often considering the amount of paint flying
around in games but i reckon better not to be:cry: when it does.
Oh and check out our propoganda mate.
Cheers
Bloff.

Just so you are aware bbob, my perspective is mostly from a bushball side of things. I don't play any sup air yet. I'm rather fond of running around in the bush for an hour or two and sweating like a :hammer: .
So I'm probably giving a different kind of advice than the tourney boyz.
Hey,
Thx for all the info, its really helped. I think I'm pretty sorted now.. Now I just have to wait for my licence :S
I've been looking around and it seems that the SP Ion is a pretty good first marker, decent speed n accuracy for a cheap price. Tho its suppost to be hard to work on... Any comments? I'm thinking it should be light and fast enough for casual sup-air, and still be tough enough for woodsball.. Also seems to have a lot of parts available to customise it..
With the goggs the JT Flex8's look alrite, but whats the big difference between them and the pro-flex's? They look different but seem to take the same lenses, etc..
