The best bet would be to ask at your local police station, or ring the firearms registry (phone number for registry is in the melbourne phone book under police victoria).

Nope, definitely not illegal. In fact, if you don't own, or don't plan to own a marker, you can just go and play if you're 18+ years old (after booking a group booking session with friends). If you want to own a marker, then follow the above, as they can answer all questions easily.
Do i need to go to moama?
Nope. There are fields popping up all over the place now between melbourne and geelong. THere's carrum downs/skye, anakie, wallan, etc and ever increasing.
What about buying equipment? can i buy my own gun now?
Yeah, you can buy a gun/marker, but you have to have a firearms licence to do so. You also have to get a permit to purchase from the police, and once you have both, arrrange pick up from a licenced gun dealer.
Where can i use it?
At registered fields only.
Cheers,
'shelle.

as of the 1st of july it will be legal for any one over the age of 18 to play paintball in victoria on approved fields. however there has been an amnesty in place that has allowed for this to occur since January 1.
there is also a new shooters licence specifically for paintballers and if you wish to purchase a paintball marker you'll need one. go in to your local police station and talk to the firearms officer about this. when i spoke to my local officer this week he told me that they are trying to set up paintball safety courses for the new licence. there's no point us paintballers doing a standard shooters safety course as it centres around not pointing your gun at other people - the exact thing that we want to do.
you can also own a maker with a class a or b licence but you need to have a good reason for getting one (hunting vermon, member of a shooters club) because those licences give you access to real firearms.
you can download acopy of the new licence application form from here - http://www.police.vic.gov.au/content.asp?a=internetBridgingPage&Media_ID=6682
hope this helps.

Hi Tommo - Great to see your interested in playing regular pball.
Previous posts explain the license situation pretty well. It is definately legal to play without a license if you are over 17 and non prohibited. To own a marker you need a license (now cat P). There are still a few fields (not naming any) that are advertising that a license is required to play in Vic - disregard this.
As for playing more regularly with players of all styles (scenario and tournament) - you should probably register your interest with Peninsula Paintball Club (PPC). Contact Neil Wheatley via their website www.paintmagazine.com and then go to the PPC link (Neils details are there somewhere together with an outline of the club etc). The memberships are pretty cheap so its hard to go wrong. You may need to play at the Carrum Feild as a punter before you can join PPC (helps prevent people just signing up for cheap pball - Neil can advise you on this).
If you can wait a couple of months then Melbourne Indoor Paintball will be operational and ready to sign new members up. The membership cost will be affordable but reflect the features and facilities available at the venue.
Feel free to sign up on the MIP website and you will be updated over the coming weeks about memberships etc. see www.melbourneindoorpaintball.com.au
Good luck and hope to see you on the field sometime.
