hmmm.. over filled.
If that was just overfilled the safety disk would have blown.
Ether that tank was defective, or more likely the safety disk was tampered with.

would the heat cause it to expand to have a part to play in the explosion?

It would have to freakin hot plus to do that. I'd lay odds it was a faulty cylynder and poor valve assembly... But those guy's sure had a measure of luck with'em.
On even the hottest summer day the burst disk would blow. I've been near one at such a time and every one else near by including me crapped/wet themselves.

Got to agree with Fatcat about them and luck. Still don't know if I would quit the sport over it. Would definitely say it is time to move on to another air system though.

Never been close like that.
Seen a couple of tanks get filled in n.z and freeze They had 5mm of ice on each of em. We had to wait 45 min for em to defrost in the sun before we could use even screw them to our markers. Only gave us 5-10 min before the days comps started...
Give me h.p.a any time.

As I do not wish to ever have something like that happen to me or anyone else. Can somebody pm me about scuba tanks, etc.
Aren't co2 cylinders supposed to be kept in the freezer or is it just us north qlders who do that?

You used to do that so they were ready and easy to fill. The problem you usually find is you get idiots who have a burst disc do it's job and burst because they've left their freshly filled cylinder in the sun. So because they don't carry a spare they cut a disc out of an ally can or anything else they can find to fill the hole. Like I said "idiots". Congratulations you've just made a bomb. So guys be careful with all high pressure components and carry spare burst discs if you use Co2
