I know this has probably been asked a million times by others but with so many markers out there its hard to choose a Strarters Marker (first paintball gun).I think some of the SPYDER markers sound not bad?,have heard bad things about PIRANHA's/ MAC DEV guns too??!!,I was thinking of a TIPPMAN 98 at one stage but may opt for something better??.Being a newbie I dont want to spend a fortune, but dont want an utter piece of junk either = any suggestions would be helpfull as a mate wants to purchase one too.
Considered a smart parts ion?
There are threads on this here recently....

Do yourself a favour, buy a good mid to top-end marker the first time. A quick breakdown of what I have seen so far without trying to RUBBISH anyones products.
My flatmate purchased a new McDev "Hurricane" for $650 complete with CO2(Field Rental Marker) it sucked, chopped balls like a nagging ex-wife, eats o-rings and hard to fire accurately. Then purchased a second-hand McDev "Sonic (ICD BM2K)" for $900 complete with Air system (Mid Range Marker) not too bad, still chops balls to some extend and some tuning problems. Now onto a second hand McDev "Cyborg upgd. Sonic Cyborg" for $1200 without Air system (Top End Marker) runs very well, no ball chop, very accurate.
Next door neighbour purchased a new Bob Long "Intimidator" approx. $2500 complete with Air system (Top End Marker) has had nothing but bounce/chop problems and the stock barrel is not too good (might be half the problem). Wishes he gone in another direction, might be he plays with the settings too much.
Other Team mate purchased a second hand WDP "Angel" approx. $1500 complete with Air system (Mid Range Marker) shoots very fast but is heavy and chops balls. He will upgrade when has more money.
I personally play with a new McDev "Cyborg" for $2500 with Air system (Top End Marker) not one single problem at all (touch wood), very easy too strip and maintain (unlike my Girlfriend). It is my first and if I treat it well hopefully the only marker that I will need to buy. Basicly "its a Volvo, its square, its boxey but its safe".
Long story short, buy as good as you can afford the first time, even if it is second hand. Don't go for looks, go for reliability. Like all things, no-one wants a $1000 paperweight.

Go to your local fields and try what is there first of the four markers you named only one has a bad reputation.
Learn what you want to play (tournie or scenario) and then buy accordingly

Yep i rekon try them all out yourself and get an idea on what feels best but if you want top end and fairly basic to look after / sevice i would look hard at the cyborg, and cause there an Australian company help isnt far away.
The support sold it for me anyway.
Fairly basic, and fasttttt!

Most cheap guns are pretty crap. Then theres the high end guns which are all pretty good but like you said you dont want to spend a tonne so the Ion which is new looks like the best of both worlds...theres a video of one shooting on www.forceofnature.com ...its under $500 by itself and really good performance for its price.

It gets down to:
(a) are you just playing Rec Ball or looking at Tournament play
(b) what can you afford & does this mean you already have budgeted for goggles etc..
Plenty of great deals from $600 under for new markers from any of the online Aus shops that will be great for Rec Ball.
Plenty of second hand markers around $1,000 that are ideal for tournament
or
plenty of new markers for $1000 plus from the online Aus shops for new tournament gats.

there are so many markers out there second hand for under 1k.... sonic cockers, mags, angels blah blah. Big Rob just sold an lcd Angel for $900 that would have been a great buy. Just keep looking in the for sale section & something will pop up. try & buy a complete system. or ask one of the senior members if it is a good buy.

Try these for paintball slang.
http://www.paintballny.com/PM_beginners_Slang.htm
http://www.angelfire.com/ri/paintballgames/dictionary.html
http://www.bigdpaintball.com/slang.php
And as they all say go to a paintball field and talk to the pro's about thier markers and make an informed choice.
Be warned as every player owns what they believe is the "Best" marker there is :D

if you wanna have a look at guns go to http://www.paintballshop.com.au/shop.php or www.ppba.com.au talk to the guys there and ask for their opinion on markers for your needs also make sure parts are available and its the right marker for your budget.
im new to the game too and all the people that have helped me have
the samething idear . do you play tournie or scenario .
by the way no matter which marker you get someone will tell you it's crap.

As most people say, try before you buy. If you are in Sydney come out to Action Paintball and you can try all the different types of markers out there to find which one suits you best.

Don`t buy Smart Parts!
my opinion:
high end guns: Dye, Mac Dev, AKA
midle: Cocker (if you are a friend of style)
cheap guns: Pro Toys, Spyder
Semi: Tippman
OK, Nerve is a very good gun but they have too much problems in production. 1 of 10 dosn`t never work.

Yes I have! I have also written that nerve is a good gun but some friends of me had a nerve and 2 of 25 (teamsponsoring) guns dosn`t work. They have send them back to SP but noboby can find the problem. And now they must wait over 4 weeks and they can`t play... this is very great shit!!!
I`ve had a shocker before (12 months), this gun was very quick but the o-rings are not made for hard conditions and the support from SP was not best. I know some SP factory teams in europe and you can talk to them, the most of them are now no SP teams because SP make too much probs.
You can get every other gun very quick, DM4/DM5 with Musashi- or NYX-Chip is much better them a nerve! Nerve is only ramping and nothing else....
Why does the fishes think ROF/BPS is all what you need, take your money and buy paint to get more skill, a gun is nessesary but not all!
I can win with a tippman against some players with high end guns and this without cheating.

How do you find the TES toad? Ive only ever played rec ball so this will be my first foray into tourney. Infact the majority of our team will be new to tourney with the exeption of 2 players. is the tes a good entry level marker? Mistkriebel, Whats wrong with smart parts? The vid I saw poted by TRENT in the lounge, testing the ION looked pretty good, except for the number of balls chopped with the stock barrel.
