In Qld, I just did my Firearms Act Safety Certificate. I am looking at a licence for recreational as well as paintball reasons, but if you want it only for paintball it is probably a pain in the butt. In QLD you need the safety certificate, then a reason, and then send in the forms.

There is a lot of information (IE: a 5 hr lecture) in the safety course about stuff that has no relevence to paintball (like...never point a firearm in the direction of a person) but i found it interesting (though i already knew most of it). The system works on a step by step basis. I tried working out all the fine detailed nitty gritty before i started out but i realised that it all kind of sorts itself out. You just need to take the first step (like asking here...or better still, visit a cop shop and get the paperwork), and then the people that you encounter in that first step show you the next step.

THe biggewst thing you may want to work out from the start (if you are budget conscious) is how much it will all cost. I need to budget in order to save the amount of money for the course (done), the application, membership (? if you need it for a reason?), PTA and then, finally, the gear. Check the prices at your local cop shop for your 1) safety course 2) application for licence 3) permit to aquire (needed as well for ownership). In QLD you need to have done the safety course within a year for application of licence. Once you've done all that. Check the price of Gear and Membership (?may be needed for 'genuine reason'?) with a paintball club or a rifle range.

My 2 cents...

Somantic in NSW call Action, or call the Firearms registry (1300 362 562). You need to get forms posted to your address (up to a week or more) then fill them out n send them back (express if you want to speed up the process). They'll take some time to process, it varies, some people have got theirs back pretty fast. You'll go to the RTA and be issued with photographic Firearms license. Then you need to obtain a Permit to aquire (that will take a month) for each firearm. Remember to check safe keeping requirements. Just gotta get the ball rolling.

Ive had my Vic licence for about 12 years and it was hard to get, as everything had to be inspected and i needed several valid reasons to apply for one.
Even getting it re-newed was a pain, as they knocked me back 3 times with the only reason being i hadn't filled the forms in correctly ( Which i had they were just dumb asses)
Then i moved to queensland applied for my ticket and got it within 2 weeks. Yay
and it took a week to register a second maker with the gun amnesty. Double Yay.
